As you may have heard, the internet “hactivist” group Anonymous has threatened to release the source code to certain Symantec products. As of this writing, the group has back-pedaled somewhat and is now stating it will not do so. Whether or not they actually release and/or post the source code (which contains specific details on how the software works), there is some important information we have received as a Symantec Partner that needs to be shared with our clients as well as the general public at-large.
First, most of the affect products are old and out of date. Additionally, a release of the source code does not mean that any specific system has been compromised, but does mean that those with malicious intent would have specific knowledge of how to possibly circumvent the security provided by these products.
Clients with a managed services agreement do not have cause for concern, as their protection systems have been updated to current releases, more recent than the products in question. Security is always a concern, and as part of the normal maintenance we perform on your network(s), we make sure that your protection is of the latest version.
For those who are non on a services agreement, as well as the general public, we recommend the following if you utilize Symantec/Norton products, in response to the possible threat:
1. For Symantec Endpoint Protection (most business clients) and Norton Products (home users), make sure you are not only up-to-date with definitions and signatures, but also the latest version (ie Norton 2011 or 2012 and not 2006).
2. For those who utilize PC Anywhere, ensure you have a solid password in place, and access is granted to only absolutely necessary personnel.
If you have any questions, need assistance upgrading, or think your system may have been compromised, please call out office at 609-858-5542 or 877-678-0155 for assistance.
